Presentation Zen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery (Voices That Matter) – Garr Reynolds

Professor: "Today, we're going to talk about the four stages of rage and how easy it is to make people angry."

"Stage one: shock." He draws a diagram on the board and says, "Do you get it?"

"No," the students say.

"Then, I'll show you how to do stage one." There is a random number that the professor calls. "Hello, I want to speak to Johnny," the professor says. Someone at the end of the line says, "There's no Johnny here," and looks shocked.

"Stage two is when you get angry." He draws a diagram on the board and says, "Do you get it?"

"No," the students say.

"Then, I'll show you how to do stage two in real life." He takes the phone and dials the same number. "Hello, I'd like to speak to Johnny. I'll be right back." "As I told you the last time, there is no Johnny here," she says. The person gets angry and says, "Stop calling!"

"Anger is stage three." He draws a diagram on the board and says, "Do you get it?"

"No," the students say.

Finally, I'll show you how to do stage 3. He takes the phone and dials the same number. "Hello, I'd like to speak to Johnny. I'll be right back." "Are you crazy? I don't know." You didn't believe me when I told you there was no Johnny here! You are calling someone by their name. I don't know where Johnny is right now. The person says, "Stop calling this number."

Four is "rage." He draws a diagram on the board and says, "Do you get it?"

"No," the students say.

Finally, I'll show you how to do stage 4. He takes the phone and dials the same number. "Hello, I'd like to speak to Johnny. I'll be right back." The person at the end of the line doesn't say anything for a split second. Then, they start shouting and swearing, and they say they'll call the police. If you call this number again, I'll find you and put Johnny on your face.

"It's so easy to make people angry," says the professor at the end of the lecture.

One of the students says, "I can tell you about another stage." "After anger, there is a state of awe."

He asked, "And how is that?"

There is a diagram on the board. "Do you understand?"

"No," the students say.

In order to show you how to do it, I'll show you the last step in practice. When the student picks up the phone, he or she says the same thing: "Hello, I'm Johnny." Is anyone calling me? The person at the end of the line can't speak.

The joke is true. However, there is something important to learn from it. Most people get bored, angry, or stupefied very quickly. It is important to learn how to use stories and give a great presentation if you want people to listen to your message, even if they are just one person or a group of people.
