When we think about fantasy books, we think of war, politics, magic, and adventure. The best fantasy audiobooks have a lot of energy and a lot of pomp and show to carry those big ideas.
We also think about the length. Most fantasy books are very long (the word “epic” is used a lot), and they often turn into trilogies or whole series as well, which makes them even longer.
If you’re going to spend a lot of time listening to fantasy audiobooks, the narrators need to be top-notch. They need to have the right tone and atmosphere for the story to move forward.
For fantasy novels, you have to think about things like how long they are and how they sound and how exciting they are. Audible has a lot of fantasy books that you can listen to right now. A solo, a pair, or a group of people read each of these best fantasy audiobooks. These narrators add so much magic to the stories.
Besides, as the title says, all of these books can be found on the Audible app (some are even Audible exclusives). This is why you should think of these as some of the best fantasy books on Audible at the moment. Let’s do this.
The Sandman by Neil Gaiman
Narrated by Riz Ahmed, Kat Dennings, Taron Egerton, Neil Gaiman, James McAvoy, Samantha Morton, Bebe Neuwirth, Andy Serkis, and Michael Sheen
If you like fantasy books, this is a great one to listen to because it’s so different and exciting! Because the source material is a comic book, it’s not very often that you see a comic book made into an audiobook.
To do this, an all-star cast of actors was put together for the job. This list of actors is so good that it almost scares you. There are a lot of sound effects and music that help to fill in for the comic book images.
Bold: It’s one of the best fantasy books on Audible right now. Even though it isn’t perfect, it’s still one of the best on the market right now.
Loved Scottish actor James McAvoy plays Morpheus and adds a lot of human empathy to the role. Author Neil Gaiman himself plays the narrator, which is a role he is very good at and is loved by his fans, so it’s a good fit.
It has a lot of well-known actors in it, like Michael Sheen, Andy Serkis, and Kat Dennings. All of them do their best. The Sandman is one of the best fantasy audiobooks you can get right now. It’s a new step for audiobooks, and it’s one of the best right now.
Another thing that makes this book unique is that it is only available on Audible. You can only get this book through that service, and it’s one of the best audiobooks on Audible right now.
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
Narrated by Christopher Lee, James McAvoy, Natalie Dormer, David Harewood, Sophie Okonedo, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Anthony Head
There are two Neil Gaiman books at the top of this list, even though it might seem like a lot. When Gaiman reads his own books, he is an amazing narrator. He is well-known enough to get the best actors for his fantasy audiobooks, so they sound great.
The audiobook of Neverwhere can be found on Audible, which is great, but it was first recorded as a BBC radio play (very cool). If you think about how Neverwhere was originally written for TV and then changed into a book, this group of actors works very well together.
We get to see James McAvoy again as our hero, Richard, but we also get to see Christopher Lee as the Earl of Court and Benedict Cumberbatch as the Angel of Islington.
This is a full radio drama, so there are background sound effects that add just the right amount of immersion and illusion to make you feel like you’re in London Below.
If you like fantasy, this is one of the best audiobooks you can get. The fact that the original BBC radio drama is now available on Audible is so cool! Another one of the best fantasy books on Audible, without a doubt, is this one.
The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern
Narrated by Dominic Hoffman, Dion Graham, Bahni Turpin, Allan Corduner, Fiona Hardingham, and Jorjeana Marie
The Starless Sea is another book with a group of people in it. It was written by Erin Morgenstern, who became famous with her first book, The Night Circus.
The Night Circus was a better book for me, but The Starless Sea is by far the best audiobook. The group cast adds so much texture and tone to the story, taking it to new heights.
The Starless Sea is one of those books where listening to the audiobook is the best way to read the book. If you like fantasy books, this is one of the best audiobooks you can listen to right now.
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
Narrated by Andy Serkis
Many of us, no matter what age we were, read The Hobbit when we were young. For many people, this was their first time reading fantasy books (and even books in general). Speaking for myself, I read The Hobbit when I was very young.
It doesn’t matter that The Hobbit is such a classic and is loved by so many people. It still deserves to be on this list because Gollum himself, Andy Serkis, reads the book.
Serkis has already been talked about in this post because he is part of the audiobook cast for The Sandman. Here, he is the only one narrating The Hobbit, and he does a great job.
Andy Serkis is known for his voices, accents, and acting in different roles. There isn’t anyone better than a children’s book to show a group of people from different walks of life. Dream come true for old fans and young kids.
It is the best way to enjoy Riddles in the Dark. Serkis also reprises his role as Smeagol/Gollum, so we can enjoy the classic film in the best way possible.
Andy Serkis reads The Hobbit, and it’s one of the best fantasy audiobooks you can get right now, without a doubt (and you can enjoy it on Audible).
The Wheel of Time (series) by Robert Jordan
Narrated by Kate Reading and Michael Kramer
The Wheel of Time is very large. He died before the series was done, leaving Brandon Sanderson (more on him below) to finish it.
It’s a big decision if you want to finish a long series like this one. If you want to read the book or listen to the audiobook, this is a big deal. Fortunately, the narrators of this audiobook, Michael Kramer and Kate Reading, are both well-known fantasy audiobook narrators. Their work is top-notch.
A lot of people who read fantasy books don’t like American-accented narrators because they think fantasy characters have British accents because the setting is usually medieval Europe and the characters have British accents.
What we have here is one of the best fantasy audiobooks out there, with two great narrators (one woman and one man). If that doesn’t bother you, then this is one of the best audiobooks out there. Very interesting to dive into.
The Liveship Traders (series) by Robin Hobb
Narrated by Anne Flosnik
Robin Hobb is my favorite fantasy author, so I always planned to put her on this list. A question of which book or series to read was all that was left to decide.
I chose The Liveship Traders as the audiobook’s narrator because it was the best fit for me. In this trilogy, the British actress Anne Flosnik is so good at telling the story. She does a great job from start to finish. She adds so much heart and soul to each line.
Another thing about fantasy literature is that it’s usually thought of as a man’s thing, so seeing a series written by a woman and narrated by a woman is nice. In this case, we have a winner.
The Liveship Traders is also one of my favorite Hobb books. Flosnik wrote it as her second trilogy after the Farseer Trilogy. It has a lot of people and a lot of different island, city, and ocean settings, all of which she does with a lot of enthusiasm.

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
Narrated by Liyah Summers
The Priory of the Orange Tree is a new twist on the fantasy genre. Samantha Shannon’s fantasy epic isn’t a part of a three-book series. Instead, it’s a huge single story. There are also a lot of dragons again in fantasy novels, which makes them more important.
This is a well-thought-out story with a wide range of interesting and complex characters. Because it’s also weird as hell, which is refreshing and wonderful, you should go see it.
As for the audiobook, Liyah Summers is the only person who reads it. She does a great job. Because this is an epic fantasy book, it would have been better if there were more people in it, but not every author is as big as Neil Gaiman (even though Shannon deserves to be).
Compared to other fantasy books that have been made into audiobooks, this isn’t one of the best. But if you like to listen to your fantasy books on Audible, you should read this modern classic of the genre.
As a bonus, the Priory of the Orange Tree is also a subscription-only book. If you want to listen to the book, you’ll need an account with Audible to do so.
The First Law (series) by Joe Abercrombie
Narrated by Steven Pacey
They love Joe Abercrombie’s work and style, and there aren’t many people who don’t. Abercrombie is the master of the grimdark fantasy genre. He plays with bleakness, gore, and desolation to great effect.
A book called The Blade Itself by Abercrombie is where it all began for him. This trilogy is so addictive that not many fantasy authors can write as well as Joe Abercrombie, who wrote it.
When you listen to the audiobook, Steven Pacey, who did a great job, makes the book even more addictive.
Pacey’s voice and delivery go so well with Abercrombie’s style. Match made in heaven. This is one of the best fantasy books that you can listen to on Audible without a doubt.
When it comes to fantasy, there’s no better author than Joe Abercrombie. His grimdark works are some of the best. I think this is one of the best fantasy audiobooks you’ll ever listen to because Steven Pacey is so good at telling stories.
