Books About Forbidden Love

Flatiron Books has helped make this list of books about forbidden love.

The Night Tiger draws readers into a world of servants and masters, old superstition and new ideas, sibling rivalry, and forbidden love, all of which happen in this book. For money, Ji Lin works as a dancer in a dance hall. That might change, though, when one of her dance partners accidentally leaves behind an unpleasant souvenir. Finally, she might get the adventure she’s been looking for all this time. Ten-year-old Ren, meanwhile, is on a mission of his own. He wants to find the finger of a former master who died and bury it with the man’s body. Ji Lin and Ren’s dangerous paths cross over in this beautiful book.

Having love can be both beautiful and dangerous. It can make us happy and angry when someone we care about doesn’t listen.

In stories, forbidden love often comes with a price. We see people die and families break up all of the time. We keep reading, though. Here are some of the books I think are good about forbidden love:

Holes and Small Steps by Louis Sachar

Holes and Small Steps by Louis Sachar

In both Holes and Small Steps, love is a question of race and class. These two boys are both in prison, but they come out different. As a result of reading Small Steps, Stanley finds treasure and the end of his great-great grandfather’s curse, while Theodore finds self-acceptance and freedom.

In the first story, there is forbidden love. This led to a mob burning down her schoolhouse and the richest person in town shooting Sam in his boat. Kate Barlow became a bandit because she had an affair with an African-American man, which led to both events. He still can’t be with her. Afterwards, the rich man takes her hostage after a drought wipes out his money.

During the movie Small Steps, Theodore can’t figure out what is making him fall in love with this rich, well-known singer. He doesn’t know whether it is because she doesn’t see him as a former criminal like the rest of the world does.

When she wants to see him at a concert even though he has a scalped ticket and the police try to arrest him again, his life changes.

The Underland Chronicles by Suzanne Collins

Gregor makes sure to show that he feels the same way. They get over it.

Luxa and Gregor are attracted to each other, no matter what. He thinks Luxa is stubborn and wants to get her way sometimes, but she always has his back and he has hers. Even so, he’s a commoner and she’s a princess. Gregor won’t give up his life above ground in New York to stay in the Underland for ever. To become adults, they must grow apart.

The Uglies trilogy by Scott Westerfeld

It’s not good for Tally Youngblood to be friends with David. He’s been raised outside of Tally’s world. First, her best friend Shay has a crush on him. Because Tally did something bad in the first book, David’s mother doesn’t like her. She doesn’t like her because of that. The Mediator series by Meg Cabot

Suze is able to see ghosts. One happens to move into her new room after her mother gets married. When Jesse saves her life several times and she saves him from a failed exorcism, things start to change.

Even though Suze and Jesse are in a relationship, another mediator says that means that Suze will have to hide their relationship from her family for the rest of her life, and they won’t have kids or live together. Suze says she doesn’t care. Another thing that makes Jesse nervous is if he holds Suze back while she hides from her dog, because animals don’t like ghosts.

The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo

SIX stories that each deal with a forbidden love of some kind are given to us, not just one. Not all of them are romantic, and some of them are just plain bad. By bargaining with the family of the hunter who killed his friends, an angry fox hopes to get back at them. A daughter tries to find the killer in her village, and a mermaid gives up her safety to help a prince become the next king.

Bardugo writes fairy tales that don’t have happy endings. A proud nobleman can’t give his daughter to the best suitor, and “best” changes when she chooses the river that helps the poorest man. A nutcracker wants to help his human mistress, but he also wants to spy on her. Any kind of love is bitter.

Serpentine by Cindy Pon

I can’t say enough good things about this book. In this story, there is a lady in waiting. She is trying to keep her lady safe while dealing with her supernatural heritage. She won me over with this one.

Lady Zhen Ni wants to start a relationship with a girl she likes. Skybright is both her confidant and her protector. If Zhen Ni’s parents find out, she can say goodbye to that love. She also has to deal with her lower half becoming a snake, which is something she doesn’t want.
