Books About Foxes

For years, a fox has been following me.

He sneaked into my world through the tangled brambles at the bottom of our garden. His tail was straight and his snout was high, and he slipped into my world through the stream. If this is real, it might be. Then, around this time, Dax Jones came into my mind through the tangled brambles on the other side of my mind.

Dax was a normal kid who one day changed into a fox, but he didn't know how. Soon after, my thoughts turned into a five-part adventure series for Oxford Children's Books. Since then, Dax Jones has been in my head.

My favorite animal is the fox, but not everyone agrees with me. Foxes get a bad rap because they are greedy and dirty. A fox is shown in every light in this list of 10 of my favorite fox stories. If you read them all, you can make up your own mind about them.

The Gingerbread Man – folk tale

Early readers see this clever fox as a bad guy. He gives Gingerbread Man a ride across the river on his tail, back, snout, and – oops! – in his snappy jaws. (Yum!) But, if you ask me, that freshly-baked delinquent had to pay for what he did.

Fox In Sox by Dr Seuss

The fox from Dr. Seuss's great tongue twisting story is once again shown as a clever sweet talker in a brilliantly weird illustration. When the Fox in Socks gets more and more crazy with his word games, poor Mr. Knox can't get away from him.

The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi

When the wooden puppet boy is tricked by a fox and a cat, both pretending to be sick. This is the second time that the fox's reputation has been hurt in this classic. The two are after Pinnochio's five gold coins. They try to kill him.

The Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl

In this story, we get to see from the lupine's point of view when a group of farmers try to trap and kill Mr. Fox and his family. Because this is an anthropomorphic story, some animals who become friends with the Fox family end up as dinner. But it's still fun to watch.

Flambards by KM Peyton

If you are a fan of foxes, don't bother reading this. The hunting scenes are very graphic and make you want to run away. As a child, I was a big fan of the Flambards books, which are about a teenage girl who finds herself through horseback riding and hunting. Part of the blood-thirsty fox-hunting story in The Shapeshifter: Running The Risk was based on this.

Little Foxes by Michael Morpurgo

Telling him that he always makes me cry was the last thing I did when I saw him a long time ago. When Billy Bunch is alone in the woods, he adopts a group of fox orphans to help him find love. The story was very well-written and not at all emotional. I cried again.

Aesop’s Fables

Many of these old stories feature the fox. He mocks the crane by giving him soup in a shallow bowl, tries to get a cheesy windfall from a crow's beak, and convinces a dumb goat to jump down a well so he can use it as a ladder. The fox is sneaky, false, and cruel. I think Aesop had chickens.

The Fox & The Star by Coralie Bickford-Smith

This is a picture book you'll want to cut up and put on your walls. Then you'll have to buy a new one. Can't find the star that leads it through the dark woods. Here, in beautiful illustrations and short, perfectly-formed sentences, is a story of loss and strength. You'll cry into your kids' hair.

a book about foxes called "The Fox and the Star" is a beautiful one for kids. It tells the story of Fox and his best friend, "Star." In the end, Fox has to learn how to find his own way.

The Fox & The Hound by Daniel P Mannix

These are dark stories that are like land-based Moby Dick stories, but this one is set on land. The master of the hounds becomes obsessed with hunting down one single fox with one foxhound at a time, called Tod. Disney's movie was based on this, but there was less death and mutilation in it than there was in this movie. Not good for reading before bed.

The Thought Fox by Ted Hughes

When he was a poet laureate, he wrote this poem about nature at its wildest. It is the title of a collection of poems. One of the best books ever written is called "The Thought Fox." It's about writing. The fox's tracks through the snow look like the first tentative words written on white typewriter paper. My friend means more than I can say.

The Blue Fox: A Novel by Sjón, translated by Victoria Cribb

During this book, you'll learn about three people who have different kinds of disabilities. They are an Icelandic fox hunter, a naturalist, and a young woman. The book is as much of a fairy tale as it is a mystery, and the story changes everyone in it.

The Fox Woman by Kij Johnson

People who love each other in The Fox Woman are a Japanese nobleman and his wife and the foxes that connect them. Johnson's book is about their love. It shows both the beauty and the danger of the world outside.

The Snow Fox: A Novel by Susan Fromberg Schaeffer

The Snow Fox is based on The Tale of Genji, which tells the story of a beautiful and cruel poet named Lady Utsu who was caught between a dangerous lord and one of his loyal samurai. Utsu and the samurai fall in love even though they don't want to. They also find out that they have a strange connection to a pair of snow foxes.

Pax by Sara Pennypacker, illustrated by Jon Klassen

It is a story about a boy, his dog, and a war. When the boy's father joins the military, the boy has to leave the fox alone in the woods. When he thinks about it, he quickly realizes that he can't leave the animal alone in the world. The book tells the story of how they try to get back together.

You can still celebrate Fox Day even if you don't have time to do so. One of these books about foxes might help you get in the mood for it. Who knows? Maybe you can get your school or office to start its own Fox Day. It's a holiday I'm sure I can get behind.
