Breakups can make us feel a lot. There are many things we can think about when we lose a major relationship in our lives. These things can include how we interact with others; how well or poorly we cope; and what we may or may not be missing in our lives. Having resources to help you deal with the thoughts that may come up after a breakup can be helpful. Before we recommend any of these books, let us tell you about why we think they'd be good for you after a breakup.
Attached by Amir Levine
This book is a great way to learn about attachment styles and how we interact with other people. It talks a lot about these topics (specifically romantic partners). This book can help you understand why some relationships can be more difficult than others. It can also help you learn more about yourself and how you communicate your needs and wants in relationships, as well as how you communicate your needs. In this book, you might be able to figure out why some things happened over and over again in your past relationships.
Rising Strong by Brené Brown
To learn more about Brené Brown, you should look into her books and work. She is a therapist, and she has done a lot of research on shame and vulnerability, which are important when it comes to having a good relationship. She talks about how it feels to get up and be brave after we fall down, and she helps the reader figure out the stories we tell ourselves that keep us down. This book gives people who are going through a hard time strength and hope.
Self-Compassion by Dr. Kristin Neff
I think this book is a must-read for everyone. It can be especially helpful if you've recently broken up with someone and are being very hard on yourself. Dr. Neff talks about the three parts of self-compassion, and he gives a lot of exercises to help us practice giving ourselves grace and love. Breakups can make us feel guilty, ashamed, and other emotions that make us feel bad about ourselves. This book helps the reader work on and become more aware of how we talk to and treat ourselves.
When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chödrön
If you want to learn about Buddhism, you should read some of her best-selling books. It's called "When Things Fall Apart," and in it, she gives spiritual advice to help her clients deal with difficult emotions, like when things don't go as planned in our lives. This book is broken up into short chapters that are all labeled so you can skip around and come back to certain ones that are relevant to what you're going through. When things fall apart, this is a great book to have in your pocket. It's easy to reach for when you need words of encouragement or love.
Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb
If you want to learn about Buddhism, you should read some of her best-selling books. It's called "When Things Fall Apart," and in it, she gives spiritual advice to help her clients deal with difficult emotions, like when things don't go as planned in our lives. This book is broken up into short chapters that are all labeled so you can skip around and come back to certain ones that are relevant to what you're going through. When things fall apart, this is a great book to have in your pocket. It's easy to reach for when you need words of encouragement or love.
BreakUp and BreakOut by Rachel Thomasian and Valentina Setteducate
It was our goal to write a book that could help people who had just broken up. Our book is meant to help people understand why breakups are so hard, give exercises to help them learn more, and help them connect more with themselves so that they can get to a place of healing, closure, and connection that they make for themselves.
The Pisces by Melissa Broder
A book of essays written by Melissa Broder called "So Sad Today" is also a great breakup book. Her novel, "The Pisces," is a must-read for anyone who is going through love addiction withdrawal. There is an erotic romance with her merman rebound, but this book isn't going to make you feel better about your breakup or anything. It's a great place to go if you want to question why you need to leave. Because I read this book in two days, I was sad when it was over.
Married women use their left hand more than the right when they talk, gesture or wipe a stray hair from their eyes, " I said. Look, someone loves me this much. It was a safe journey.
The Wisdom of a Broken Heart: How to Turn the Pain of a Breakup Into Healing, Insight, and New Love by Susan Piver
Because this book says it can do nothing, I used to think self-help books were scams. People who teach meditation like Susan Piver are teaching people how to deal with the pain of a broken heart. Both philosophical and practical, it ends with a seven-day retreat of some kind to help you think through everything. A few chapters in, I had a good cry because I was going through a breakup. I downloaded it to my Kindle on the day I broke up with my boyfriend. It was comforting to be able to talk to someone who was wise but also vulnerable, like a mentor-aunt-counselor type who didn't say there was a magic cure.
"When the person you love doesn't choose you on the deepest level, even though he may love you in his own weird way, the pain of not being chosen is too much to bear." Rather than let herself be disrespected, she decided to end the relationship instead of letting herself be less than fully loved.
Communion: The Female Search for Love by bell hooks
When you go through a breakup, you might realize the degree to which you were holding on to the relationship because of a story you were telling yourself. This book is for you if you're ready to look at that story and the way stories about romantic love affect your decisions. Bell Hooks wrote this book as part of her "Love Trilogy," which is one of her best works. This book is nonfiction, but it's easy to read even if your mind gets a little distracted. It's full of feminist head-bobbers and new ways to move forward.
Relatable Quote: “As females in a patriarchal culture, we were not slaves of love; most of us were and are slaves of longing — yearning for a master who will set us free and claim us because we cannot claim ourselves.”
