Ever since I read Gary Hayden's book Walking With Plato, I want to read more books that talk about walking, too. A lot of research was done by me, and I thought it would be a good idea to share the best books about walking with you. These books about walking are all inspirational. Some of them are philosophical and some are meditational, but they all have a good message.
I didn't put books like Wild by Cheryl Strayed, Walking by Thoreau, or A Walk in the Woods by Bryson on this list. I didn't want to include them. It is easy to think of walking books when you think of books. These are the first things that come to mind. Here, you'll find books about walking, as well as books about how walking changes us and nature and landscape. Some of them are about great thinkers, and some are about people who like to walk. There are a lot of books about walking, but each one has a different message. Because I want you to walk and then change. It's time to talk.
Best Books About Walking
The Old Ways: A Journey on Foot – Robert Macfarlane
You go by the tracks, holloways and drives. You also go by the sea paths. In the past, these routes crossed the British Isles and other parts of Europe. For the first time, Robert Macfarlane finds an old world. It is a place where people walk and think and make pilgrimages and rituals. Of stories and ghosts, and above all, of the places and journeys that make us think and dream. This is one of the best books about walking.
In Praise of Walking – Shane O’Mara
Walking upright on two feet is a skill that only humans can do. It shows how we are as a species. It made it possible for us to leave Africa and go as far as Alaska and Australia, so we could spread across the world. Our hands and minds were freed. When we walk, we don't think about where we're going. How many of us know how to do that, or how much it helps us? Shane O'Mara, a neuroscientist, has written a song about walking. In it, he tells us to be amazed at how walking improves our bodies and minds. So, he tells us to be grateful for and use our amazing abilities. The one for you if you want to read books about walking written by a scientist is this one.
The Living Mountain – Nan Shepherd
One of the most important books about walking. Nan Shepherd is a master of nature writing. In this book, she talks about her trips to the Cairngorm mountains in Scotland. There, she meets a world that can be beautiful at times. And so shockingly mean to other people. Her powerful, poetic writing explores and records the rocks, rivers, creatures, and hidden parts of this unique landscape. It took Shepherd a long time to figure out what the Cairngorms were all about. Her search led her to write this famous book about the beauty of mountains. So, too, is how we think about the wild world around us. The Living Mountain was written during the Second World War, but the manuscript was kept hidden for more than 30 years before it was finally published. A book about walking brings this to mind when someone thinks about it
A Philosophy of Walking – Frederic Gros
If you like to think about things, this book is for you. People who are famous in France write a book called A Philosophy of Walking. Frédéric Gros shows how many ways we can get from A to B. As a result, what they say about us is shown by what they do. In his book, Gros talks about other thinkers who also thought that walking was important to their work. Thoreau wanted to be alone in Walden Woods, and he wondered why Rimbaud ran around in a rage and Nerval walked around to get over his sadness. This is what he shows us. He shows us how Rousseau went for walks to think, and how Nietzsche walked around the mountains to write. Kant, on the other hand, walked through his hometown every day at the same time to get away from the thought. Brilliant and so well-versed. In A Philosophy of Walking, a lot of fun and insightful ideas are shared about how to move your body. One of the most interesting books about walking that I've read so far.
Wanderlust: A History of Walking – Rebecca Solnit
Whether you're walking through a forest or a city, whether you are on a pilgrimage or a protest march, what does it mean to be outside? In this first general history of walking, Rebecca Solnit brings together many different histories to show how walking can be done in many different ways. So, Solnit says walking as history means walking for pleasure, but also walking to make a point about politics, art, and social issues. She looks at the walkers who have shaped our culture over time, from philosophers and poets who walked around in ancient Greece to the Surrealists who walked around and climbed mountains. Some of the most important walkers in history and literature are profiled in Wanderlust. It looks at how the body and the imagination work together, and how the world around the walker affects the walker. If you like Rebecca Solnit, pick this book out of books about walking if you want to read more about walking.
The Lost Art Of Walking – Geoff Nicholson
There are many books about walking, but this one is different from the rest. A long time ago, walking was the only way to get around. Now we just walk to the bus stop and the station, or we walk to our car. We can also choose to walk as a way of life, like on hiking trips, for charity, or in cities. Geoff Nicholson's The Lost Art of Walking puts walking back in the center of life by thinking about his own walks, looking at writers, artists, musicians, and filmmakers who write about walking, and looking at some of the best walkers in history. The book takes us a lot farther than most people would think we could walk, from the Oxford Street of de Quincey's London to the mean streets of LA. People go from the concrete canyons of New York City to Sheffield's seven hills and back again. By way of the British seaside and the deserts of the United States, Egypt, and then Australia, we get to them. Along the way, it talks about nude walkers, labyrinth walkers, psychogeographers, and many other people. The Lost Art of Walking is thought-provoking, imaginative, funny, and sometimes downright silly. It's also a lot of fun to read. It's a good book to read if you want to meet other people who walk.
Walking: One Step at a Time – Erling Kagge
To put one foot in front of the other is one of the most important things we do.
Erling Kagge says that people who walk go farther and live better. He says that walking to work, walking to the North Pole, and walking to school are all good ways to get around.
In this book, Walking, you will learn about the joy of exploration, the pleasure of finding new things, and the peace that can be found in this most simple of activities. One of the best books about walking, and one of the best of all time.
To the River: A Journey Beneath the Surface – Olivia Laing
Almost 60 years after Virginia Woolf drowned in the River Ouse, Olivia Laing set out on a midsummer morning to walk its banks, from source to sea, all the way through. There, she talks about how rivers play a big part in people's lives by looking at literature and myths and folklore. It's a heartfelt look at how history can be found in a landscape, and how ghosts never leave the places they love. The book is good for people who like Lang.
In Praise of Paths – Torbjørn Ekelund
After he was diagnosed with epilepsy, Torbjrn Ekelund could no longer drive. He started walking everywhere. People who like to walk become more interested in paths as they go further out into the world. It's a poignant, meandering book by Ekelund that combines the literature and history of paths with his own stories from the trail to make it even more interesting. As he walks through forest creeks and across city streets, he thinks about snail tracks from long ago and the paths of Romantic poets, among other things. As Ekelund says, if we still "understand ourselves in relation to the landscape," then what do we lose in an era of cars and GPS apps? And what will we gain by going back on the paths? You have to walk. Choose this one out of books about walking if you want to read about walking.
Wanderers: A History of Women Walking – Kerri Andrews
People who write and people who walk are both important parts of this book. It talks about ten women who have found walking important to their sense of who they are as people and as writers. A must-have book for anyone who wants to learn how to walk. In a series of portraits that are both intimate and incisive, Wanderers follows the footsteps of its subjects, starting with the daughter of a parson in the 1800s. Who wanted nothing more than to be taken for a vagabond in the wilds of southern England. This is what the person wanted. People like Nan Shepherd and Cheryl Strayed who write about walking. It didn't matter if Sarah Stoddart Hazlitt walked for miles across the Highlands, or if she took a short walk. The way Virginia Woolf did around Bloomsbury was to pace her novels into being. An alternative look at the history of walking. Wanderers leads us through the different ways of seeing and being that these ten trailblazing women speak about. One of the best books about walking, and one of the best of all time.
The Salt Path – Raynor Winn
a few days after Raynor learns that her husband of 32 years, Moth, is dying, their home and job are taken away. With nothing left and little time, they take a risk and decide to walk the 630 miles of the South West Coast Path from Somerset to Dorset, through Devon and Cornwall. Only the things they need to live are on their backs. They live in the ancient, weathered landscape of cliffs, sea and sky. It turns into a remarkable journey through every step they take, every person they meet, and every obstacle they have to deal with. The Salt Path is a true story about coming to terms with grief and the healing power of nature. Finally, it's about home and how it can be lost, rebuilt, and then found again in the most surprising ways.
