Best Books for 9 Year Old Boys and Girls (4th Graders)

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney

Most people have read and seen The Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which tells the story of Greg in his own words and drawings. It is a huge hit. In middle school, things aren't easy. Greg is here to show that it's true. If you have all of these, kids will read them again and again, which is great. (hints, hints):

Amulet by Kazu Kibuishi

This popular graphic novel series is about two siblings trying to save their mom who was taken to an underground world of elves, demons, robots, and talking animals. This will be a hit with young readers because it has beautiful art, interesting characters, and a fun story.

I Survived by Lauren Tarshis

Wow, these are really good books to read. They're great, fast-paced adventures for 9-year-olds set during important historical events that are great for kids who are just learning how to read chapter books. This is a great way for kids to learn about history while having a lot of fun. History-changing events like Pompeii, Pearl Harbor, or the Battle of Gettysburg are always the subject of the books in which young people try to stay alive.

The Last Kids on Earth by Max Brallier, illustrated by Douglas Colgate

This book is so funny that the zombie apocalypse looks like a lot of fun. Because that's how Jack thinks about life and zombie fights, and that's how he acts. When he and his best friend Quint move into the treehouse they live in, it has been upgraded and is better protected. They plan to rescue his crush June (who doesn't need to be rescued because she is very strong) and fight zombies. This is even more fun to read and imagine because there are pictures all over the place. Delightful. What a surprise! BOXED SET RIGHT HERE.

Land of Stories by Chris Colfer

They become very real when Alex and Conner (a brother and sister) are taken to the fairy tale world. A Wishing Spell must be made before they can get home. It will be dangerous, mysterious, and life-changing to find the items. You will love all of the books in this series. They are all exciting, magical adventures about characters you will love. My kids and I couldn't put these down, and we didn't want to.

The Wild Robot by Peter Brown

When you think of Roz, you think of a robot who is alone on an island with only animals around. There are animals in the wild who treat her like an animal. She must figure out how to live in the wild where they don't see her as a person. For a while, that is how it was. When Roz adopts and makes her own nest, that changes. It's a heartwarming story about family, love, and community that teachers and students love over and over again.

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate

Narrated by a gorilla named Ivan, this true story will make you cry right away. In a run-down mall, Ivan has been kept in a cage for 27 years without seeing another gorilla. She asks Ivan to help the new elephant find a better life when his old friend dies. His daughter helps him do that.

The Sasquatch Escape by Suzanne Selfors

Ben doesn't think that his summer could be any more boring than it already is. Before he saves a baby dragon. It turns out that the town has a secret veterinarian for... imaginary animals. He and his new friend, Pearl Petal, find out about it. That's when they let a Sasquatch go. Whoops. Now, the two must get the big guy to go to the vet. (It's easier said than done, but it is true). This series is a great way to pass the time.

Restart by Gordon Korman

Chase doesn't know who he is or was. When he comes out of the hospital, a strange girl dumps ice cream on his head. This gives him some clues. As time goes on, Chase comes to realize that he doesn't like the person he used to be. he'll have to figure out how he wants to be. Because he likes his new life in the film club and the new "nerdy" friends he's made there. This thought-provoking book will make kids think about their choices, behavior, and goals for the future.

Boy at the Back of the Class by Onjali Q Raúf

She and her friends learn that Ahmed was in a real war and had to leave his family. After hearing that England is going to close its borders, Alexa and her friends decide that they need to meet with the Queen so that Ahmed can be with his family. They go to the palace in person, fight with the guards, and end up in a lot of trouble, but it ends up getting them a lot of attention and a happy ending.

Allergic by Megan Wagner Lloyd and Michelle Mee Nutter

A good middle-grade comic book about a child with allergies! Her new puppy is allergic to Maggie, which makes her very sad. When a new girl moves next door, Maggie thinks that means her new friend doesn't want to be friends with her anymore because she has a puppy. meanwhile, the story shows how allergy tests work and how often people get allergy shots. Finally, the two friends come up with a way to hang out that won't bother Maggie's allergies. Story: Maggie helps her new brother, who is now a baby, and feels like she doesn't need to have an animal pet anymore.

Bernice Buttman, Model Citizen by Niki Lenz

One of the best stories I've ever read about a girl who goes from bullying to trying to be a better person. It will make you laugh and warm your heart, too. A former bully can change her ways when Bernice's mom sends her to live with her nun aunt, and this is a good chance for her to do that, too. Bernice does it, too. She makes a friend, gets nicer, and finds a home with the nuns.

Trapped in a Video Game by Dustin Brady, illustrated by Brady Jessee

It's great for both gamers and people who don't play games. If you like stories that are exciting and dangerous, you won't want to miss this series! As they play the game, both Jesse and his friend get sucked in. They're stuck in the video game! Inside the game, they meet a classmate who hasn't been seen for a long time. He is a grown-up man in the game. Because there's no way to get out. Maybe there aren't.

Elements of Genius: Nikki Tesla and the Ferret-Proof Death Ray by Jess Keating

Inventor Nikki Tesla joins a new school called the Genius Academy where she’s not the only genius and she’s supposed to start working well with others. (That will be hard!) When Nikki’s death ray is stolen from a locked safe, she and her classmates must collaborate to find it and hopefully, save the world. They follow clues around the world, thwart plots to divide their group, and capture the bad guy before he can use the death ray. Not only does this engrossing story feature smart kids who love STEM but the action and themes of friendship and growing up resonated and entertained me.
