Books For Emergent Readers

In search of the best books for your child's first read-aloud? You've found the right place! This is the next post in a series that talks about reading skills by age group.

At first, I had a hard time finding books that my kids could read and that would keep them interested. As soon as you finish reading a few of them, they lose their appeal. Books like Hop on Pop written by Dr. Seuss are very popular. I really wanted to find books that made my kids feel like they had done something well.

Creating a Libary of Early Reader Books.

We've put together a list of books that start at the very beginning of reading and move up to more advanced levels of reading. As you can see, I really like these books for many things. This book has a lot of stories that are a good fit for kids, and many of them have pictures on the pages. This can make it easier to start reading a book that has a lot of text at first.

There are a lot of different kinds of early reader books that we put in. Every child learns at a different pace. Love for reading is the most important skill children learn. To find books for a beginning reader, check out our post.

Early Reader Books for Emergent Readers

These are books that use a lot of repetition and/or rhyming to help new readers become more aware of the sounds and words they read. Many of these are funny, and the pictures help you figure out who the characters are, what the story is about, and where it is set. They are great for giving new readers a sense of security as they learn to read.

Baby Monkey Private Eye by Brian Selznick

Baby Monkey is a little monkey who lives with his mother and father.

He is very young.

A monkey is him.

He has a job now.

When you see him, you know he's Baby Monkey, a private eye.

As long as he can put on his pants, Baby Monkey can help... If he can!

It's like a picture book, a beginning reader, and a comic book in one. It has simple text and more than 120 black and white drawings that are accented with red. It's great for reading aloud and for young people who are learning to read.

Ducks in Muck (Step into Reading, Step One) by Lori Haskins

Discover what happens when a group of ducks play in the mud and then are taken away by truck!

What This Story Needs is a Pig in a Wig by Emma J. Virjan

Pig in wig, on boat, in moat, with dog and goat on log.

There are a lot of animals on this story now, so it's clear that this story needs a bigger boat! The author-illustrator, Emma J. Virján, has written a great read-aloud with cumulative text. Pig goes on an exciting boat ride and learns that life is more fun when you have friends.

See Otto (Ready to Read Adventures of Otto) by David Milgrim

He runs, runs, runs in this Pre-level 1 class. By New York Times best-selling author and illustrator David Milgrim, this book is ready to read. A lot of people love this series, which has been called "award-winning" and "star-reviewed."

Hi! Fly Guy by Tedd Arnold

There was a fly that was moving around. In search of food, he went to the store. Something good. Something sludgey. This is how it looked like: A boy was walking. He was trying to find something to catch, so he looked around. Something clever. For the Amazing Pet Show, we need something.

The boy and the fly start a beautiful friendship. Er, and so, a very funny friendship starts. Tedd Arnold, a best-selling author and illustrator, used hyperbole, puns, slapstick, and silly drawings to make an easy read that is full of fun. With a holographic cover that looks great. Four more are coming. This is the first.

When a bus driver takes a break from his route, a pigeon comes forward to take his place. But you haven't met anyone like this before. Throughout the book, he will plead with you, wiggle with you, and beg for your help. Children will love being able to answer back and decide what happens to him.

In his first picture book, Mo Willems, a well-known cartoonist, perfectly captures a preschooler's temper tantrum.

Early Reader Books for the Decoding Reader

There are great pictures on every page in these picture books and early chapter books. The stories are easy to read but not too complicated for new readers to understand. Many beginning readers can read words and understand stories, but too many words on a page can make it seem impossible. The picture books we chose for this list are so funny that even older kids can enjoy them.
