In 2015, All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven debuted on the New York Times bestseller list and quickly became a worldwide phenomenon. When it comes to mental illness, Niven does a masterful job of portraying the struggles of those who suffer from it without being patronizing.

Two characters, Finch and Violet, stand out as memorable and three-dimensional protagonists who meet on the brink of their mental health crises. They serve as a reminder that people with mental illness are more than just a diagnosis; they are complex, multifaceted beings.

Even though she has an unfortunate surname, Libby Stout's weight is just a part of her physical makeup, not who she is. Since the death of her mother, she has spent a great deal of time tending to the emotional needs of her father and herself. With high school comes the chance to make new friends, find your first love, and perhaps embark on a journey of self-discovery.

He's charming and self-assured, and he knows how to blend in, but Jack Masselin is hiding a secret: He can't recognize anyone's face, not even his own.

The two unlikely friends, Libby and Jack, who find themselves in the same counseling group and assigned to the same community service project, begin to form a bond they never expected.

14. Thirteen Reasons Why, by Jay Asher

Clay Jensen received a box of audiotapes from Hannah Baker, in which she recorded a list of the people she believes were responsible for her suicide. The only way he can find out for sure if he is or is not on the list is to listen to what they have to say. Listen to what Hannah has to say, then pass it along to someone else.

Clay's narration reveals the names on Hannah's list and how they contributed to her mental state.

A Colorado school's curriculum director ordered librarians to stop distributing the book in May 2017 because of a recent spike in student suicides. Thirteen Reasons Why didn't seem to be banned, but that could be because the show doesn't glorify suicide; rather, it examines how a series of seemingly unrelated events can accumulate to have a significant impact on a person's mental health.
