Toe to Toe
by Deborah Leblanc
A spirited Cajun named Nonie Broussard lives in Clay Point, Louisiana, along with a ragtag group of out-of-the-ordinary Joes. As a result of the closure of the Garmin factory, Nonie is left with major financial difficulties—she literally has none. She has no choice but to accept a job at her family’s funeral home, which she has avoided since she dropped out of college.
Nonie was not afraid of the dead. Contrary to popular belief, this was in fact the case. As far as she’s been aware, she has always been able to see the dead. In the past, she’d tried to tell her parents about it, but they vehemently rejected it as a figment of her imagination. Only two people had access to Nonie’s innermost thoughts and were aware that she was the real deal. Guy Skinard and Buggy Mouton were Nonie’s best friends since kindergarten, and she’d been in love with Guy ever since she first saw him in high school. Nine years later, Buggy was working at MeeMaw’s Café off of Main Street in Clay Point and Guy was always there to support her, but this time he was gone. Guy’s pranks continued even after he died, and Nonie’s ex-boyfriends were no exception. She couldn’t help but wonder what kind of havoc he’d cause if he accompanied her to the funeral home and mixed with the recently deceased.
Nonie’s first day on the job as a funeral director goes horribly wrong, and it has nothing to do with Guy. It’s caused by the people they’re supposed to be serving. Dover Fontenot, the 72-year-old Major of Clay Point, dies in a car accident after partaking in some extracurricular activity, but it wasn’t with his wife Hazel. Dover’s mistress Anna Mae Turner arrives at Broussard’s Funeral Home for the visitation and hell’s gates open, turning the place into a war zone for the elderly.
Buggy, Nonie’s best friend, decides to drop by the funeral home amid the flying hairpieces, canes, and curses with some news she can’t wait to share. For a Louisiana cable network, a paranormal investigation team is needed to investigate alleged haunted locations. Each member of the crew receives a $500 salary for each location that has the potential to be used for filming. Nonie, on the other hand, has a nose for the’restless’ dead, and Buggy is well aware of this.
Even though Nonie doesn’t know a thing about paranormal investigation, she accepts Buggy’s offer to join the Boo Krewe, which is the name Buggy has given the makeshift group.
Nonie may be drawn to money, but she has no idea that the dead will sometimes follow her home, into her bed, bathroom, and shower because they are overjoyed that someone can see and hear them. To make matters worse, just as Nonie is about to wrap up her first investigation, she is visited by the mayor’s former mistress, Anna Mae Turner, who is now deceased and insistent that Nonie find her killer.
A giant wart on her butt of life—which no amount of Compound W can remove—is revealed to be the ‘gift’ Nonie has carried with her since birth.
Dirty Blood (Dirty Blood, #1)
by Heather Hildenbrand
Last night, I killed a woman. I used nothing but my bare hands and an old piece of pipe I found near the dumpster to complete the task. Even so, I was taken aback by this revelation. When she charged me, her body changed and she became a wolf. That’s the part that scared me the most, the part that I’m still trying to process. All teeth and claws were out in full force. When I stood over her dead body, she was once again a young girl. That’s when I went into a state of shock… That was the moment he walked into the room.
The only thing I can do now is accept the facts as they are. One, Werewolves exist. Second, I was created with the sole purpose of slaying them.
