Nonfiction Books For 2nd Graders

Peter Rabbit and Pooh Corner can make the earliest moments of reading feel like they're out of a fairy tale. But nonfiction can also make you wonder and be excited, if you choose the right books to read.

It doesn't matter whether it's a picture book about New York, a graphic novel about George Washington, or an early chapter book about civil rights. We've got options for any kid's interests and reading level.

Walt the lobstah wants to win first place in the Swell Gahdens contest every year. Milton, on the other hand, gets the award every year.

Gahbage piles up in their yards one day, and the two must work together to save their yahds. As the title says, this cute picture book is a lot of fun.

My Super Science Heroes: Alan Turing and the Power of CuriosityWritten by: Karla Valenti

Illustrated by: Annalisa Beghello

Readers in elementary school will love this high-interest comic book. This is what people say about Alan Turing: He was an actual mathematician, cryptographer, and superhero. His work in math and in defeating the Nazis during World War II made him a very important person in history. This book in the My Super Science Heroes book series talks about how he used his curiosity superpower to crack codes and solve problems. It also talks about how he made a superhero out of himself.

Readers will enjoy "Alan Turning and the Power of Curiosity," but they will also learn a lot from it, too.

Memphis, Martin, and the Mountaintop

Illustrated by: R. Gregory Christie

It's 1968, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is just getting started on what will be his last fight for justice before he was killed by a police officer in Memphis. It's the only way for workers to stand up for civil rights when the city doesn't improve working conditions after two African Americans were killed because of dangerous equipment. She gets excited when she sees her father, a sanitation worker, take a stand for equality as the events unfold.

This book tries to teach kids about important historical events in a way that they can understand and relate to. The beautiful mix of prose and poetry makes it a powerful book for young readers.
