The best preschool counting books are likely to be on the Internet if you have a toddler who is very interested in things. You may have found this post by searching for the best preschool counting books on the Internet.
You can trust me. I've been there, and I've got your back!
The alphabet and how to count to 10 were two things our daughter learned on her own before she was 18 months old. This left us scrambling for ways to help her be as curious as Einstein and learn as much as she kept saying she was ready for.
Now that she's 22 months old, I've spent a lot of time looking for a number book for preschoolers that goes up to 100, as well as ones that teach different ways to count, like skip counting and grouping.
The reason my child is so "numbers curious" is that we've used a lot of these books ourselves, and we still use them today. Some of them are on my "wish list," and they're also based on a lot of research I did for my own family.
Here is a list of some of our favorite counting books. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do!
Children’s Counting Books from One to Five
Five Little Ducks and The Very Hungry Caterpillar are two of my favorite counting books for preschoolers. I remember reading them when I was a child in the 1980s. All three of these number books are so fun that your child won't even know they're setting the groundwork for counting to five.
Five Little Ducks
This twelve-page book has tabs that make it easy for little fingers to turn the pages. They go on a sweet journey from one to five on their fingers and toes. There are bright and colorful illustrations that are easy to see, and the sing-along rhymes will keep your child's attention as they learn about the world. My two-year-old daughter loves this song!
Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons
Pete the Cat is a favorite because of his rockin' stories that are also fun and silly. In this way, he will teach your little boy or girl how to count up from four. When he loses his button, he won't cry. Full of familiar pictures and a fun, repeating song, be ready to read this one a million times and not get tired of it.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
This is the most popular book in a huge collection of Eric Carle books and illustrations. It's fun to watch the caterpillar eat one, two, three, and more tasty snacks as he learns about the days of the week and food names. You can see why it's one of our favorite books for the first year.
Books About Numbers from One to Ten
For preschoolers, there are a lot of books that help them learn to count, especially ones that help them count 1 to 10 and then 10.
1, 2, 3 with the 10 Little Rubber Ducks
This is a favorite in our house. When our daughter was 18 months old, we gave it to her as a gift. She still takes it out of her bookshelf a few times a week. Because it's small and shaped like a duck, most little kids find it cute. They will be able to count their way through spring with bunnies, flowers and ducklings. The well-known Eric Carle illustrations are interesting and make counting from one to ten fun and easy.
Bear and Hare Where’s Bear?
Help Hare count from one to ten and backwards with bright, colorful number illustrations that your child will love to look at with you. Then, help him find Bear, who has a bad habit of putting things away. But then he's gone! Find out how to count to ten with this cute counting book and have fun at the same time.
Flip, Flop, Find! Counting 1 2 3
This book is great for people who are young and curious. Each egg has a clue that helps your child figure out who is inside. Check to see if they were right. You can count from one to ten with both the number pictures and the number words.
Fish Eyes: A Book You Can Count On
This cute book is full of fish that are very bright. Your child will be drawn to them. For easy reading, it is written in a rhyme that your child will remember. It will help your child learn how to count from one to 10 by counting a group of friendly fish. To make the book more fun, the fisheye is cut out. Also, the book is easy to hold because it has pages that are simple to turn. Many preschool teachers love this book, and it's one of the best number books for kids to read, too.
Stack the Cats
This book is full of silly and weird cats of all shapes and colors. It not only teaches kids how to count, but it also teaches them other simple math ideas, making it more of a complete preschool math book. A cat can be stacked in a lot of different ways, and these cats will figure out the best way. It's a good choice if you're looking for math books for preschoolers that don't just teach how to count.
My Very First Book of Numbers
It's a fun way for kids to learn their numbers, and Eric Carle, the author and illustrator of the book, did a great job. It has both the numbers and the words that make up the numbers. This helps people learn how to recognize the numbers and read the words. Match the pictures of fruits with the numbers that go with them for a fun game that makes your child think about what each number means. Eric Carle has made a lot of number books for preschoolers that you'll want to check out. They have bright and fun illustrations.
How Do Dinosaurs Count to Ten?
This cute preschool number book is a favorite for kids who are just starting to learn how to count. A clever way to teach kids about colors, letters, and even different kinds of dinosaurs is to spell out the numbers in words.
Daddy Hugs
This sweet book is meant to give dads another reason to cuddle their babies. It's easy for little hands to hold, and it shows how many different ways to give hugs. The numbers are shown and written out for different levels of understanding. An adorable way to teach your kids how to count in your daily routine.
1 Hunter
If you want to take your child on a hunt that doesn't go well, this book will help. It has a lot of eye-catching jungle scenes that are also very imaginative. They don't see the two elephants and three giraffes, and other fun wild animals that one hunter doesn't see at all. Each number is shown in a bright color so that it stands out for easy understanding. This is one of the best books for toddlers to learn about numbers.
One Spotted Giraffe
There are a lot of bright and colorful animals that your kids will enjoy as they count their way to ten on this game. It's time to count the giraffes, lemurs, and crocodiles, and each has a flap with a number on the front. Lift the flap, and the same numeral in the shape of that animal will show up. This is a great book for reinforcing number recognition, and it's also a lot of fun to read.
Anno’s Counting Book
It's a beautiful way to show your child what each day and season looks like. People, trees, houses, and more are added to the landscape as they keep track of them all. This number book for toddlers will help your child see math in everyday situations. It also teaches counting, grouping, and symmetry, which makes it a favorite among toddler math books because it's easy for kids to learn.
Doggies
Count all the cute and silly dogs with your child. You'll have a lot of noisy fun with each one. The numbers are both illustrated and written out so that everyone can learn at their own pace. The silly expressions on the dogs' faces will keep everyone laughing. The first counting book our daughter ever had was this one, and it's still a lot of fun even after almost two years,
On the Launch Pad
Keep your child excited about space and math as they count down to blast-off. When you look at these colorful pictures, the numbers are cleverly hidden. This turns learning into a game of backward-counting hide and seek! A good way to teach the number 1-10 in a different way.
Ten Little Ladybugs
Ten ladybugs will go on a very dangerous trip. This is how it works: When you turn a page, a ladybug peeks out of the holes in the board. This is a good book for preschoolers who already know how to count forward. The ending is happy, and your child will learn how to count backward from ten to one.
One Duck Stuck
Several groups of animals, from one to ten, try to get this duck out of the way. It's calling for help all the time. Each page has a well-written rhyme, and the happy ending requires a lot of teamwork, making this a good book for preschoolers on a lot of different fronts.
Mouse Count
Follow these mice on their journey with a very hungry snake, and let your child learn how to count from one to ten both forwards and backwards as they go. Pictures are simple and beautiful, and the rhymes keep people reading.
Ten Little Caterpillars
You can help your child learn ordinal numbers like "second," "third," and "fourth" by having them follow each caterpillar on their own little journeys as they learn about them. There is a glossary for them to use that gives facts about each caterpillar type in the story. For preschoolers who are interested in number books with a little twist (ordinals!), this one is for you.
One Gorilla: A Counting Book
The illustrations in this primate-counting story are the real stars. They are so bright and vivid. A lot of people think that Anthony Browne makes each species come to life by making their faces and expressions look like they do. The numbers are shown so that your child can easily remember them as she or he counts the beautiful primates on each page. These are great books for toddlers who also love animals. This is a great number book for them.
