To play the piano again is one of my New Year's resolutions, and it is the one that I most regret not keeping when February comes around. It all started when I was about 5 years old, and I stuck with my weekly lessons and daily practice until I was about 15 and schoolwork and exams started to get really bad. At that point, I just stopped. In the years since, I've tried a few small things to get back into the mindset of a piano player. To find things I wanted to play on the piano, I looked through my old beginner's books. I made my brother crazy by practicing a very simple version of "Prince Ali" on Saturday mornings. I took a few lessons, too. That dedication I had when I was a child just didn't come back to me as an adult.
A lot of people have told me that when you've been away from an instrument for so long, you need to start from the beginning. But that doesn't have to be a bad thing. It's sometimes the best way to find a new way forward. This is true whether you're a child or an adult, completely new to music, or just dusting off your old piano to try and get back into it. These beginner piano books will help you lay the groundwork for your practice, no matter what.
Get Set! Piano Pieces Book 1 by Heather Hammond and Karen Marshall
This book was written by two experienced music teachers, one of whom has worked with multi-sensory teaching. It's great for kids of all ages, no matter how they learn. If you want to learn about music theory without it being too dry or overwhelming, this book is a good choice.
Alfred’s Basic Adult Piano Course: Lesson Book Level 1 by Willard A. Palmer
This book is great for adult beginners (or people as rusty as I am). When you use a chord-based approach, it gives you enough of a challenge to keep you busy, but not so much that it gets too hard too quickly.
The Alfred's Theory Series is meant to go along with the Basic Lesson Series, but the two don't have to be used at the same time. If you want to learn more about music theory and how your new instrument works, this is the book for you.
It's up to you whether you want to read these books on their own or with the practical series for a more complete education. Also, your piano teacher can help you figure out which steps to work on first.
John Thompson’s Easiest Piano Course: Pop Songs by John Thompson
A good choice for teens or tweens who want to learn to play but don't like the idea of playing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" over and over again. Playing well-known pop songs is a great way to learn, and it can be very rewarding for new players.
Easy Piano: The Disney Collection
People love Disney songs, and who doesn't love a Disney song? When you're just starting out at the piano, playing a song that everyone knows and can sing along to is a great thing to do.
Chester’s Easiest Piano Course Book 1 by Carol Barratt
The frog is adorable, and he has a pet cat. I love this book. As a cat owner, I think that would be bad. taught me how to play the piano the first time. If you're a parent with a child who wants to learn how to play, this book is a great choice.
How to Play Piano and Keyboard by Alan Brown
This book focuses on keyboards, which is good for people who can't fit a piano in their homes. It breaks down how to play, with diagrams for people who like to learn by seeing. If you've ever had a perfect-bound book fall out of its place and hit you in the middle of a song, this is a huge help.
The African-American Music Instruction Guide for Piano by Darshell DuBose-Smith
This book has a lot of good information about the history of music, as well as how to play different types of African American music in both a practical and theoretical way. The book starts by looking at melody, accompaniment, and rhythm. It also has a section on making your own songs, which more advanced players will love.
Piano Book for Adult Beginners by Damon Ferrante
As long as reading sheet music isn't your thing, this book and video course is the best way to start playing the piano. Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, and all four Beatles didn't have to read sheet music to play. There are videos that you can watch to help you learn everything from Greensleeves to The Entertainer.
Pop Songs for Kids by various authors
It's a great book for Taylor Swift, One Direction, and Katy Perry fans. It has simple versions of their favorite songs, so they can sing along. Check out this site even if you're not a child, because it's good for everyone.
Simple Songs: The Easiest Easy Piano Songs by Hal Leonard Corp
Simple Songs is a must-have for anyone who wants to learn how to play the guitar. It has a wide range of popular tunes, both old and new. Easy to follow: You'll soon be able to play your favorite songs.
Piano books for beginners are often put together by teams that aren't named. There isn't much variety in books written by people. However, books aren’t the only way to get a great introduction to the piano. There are a lot of great YouTube channels that show you how to start learning how to play this great instrument. Warren will teach you everything you need to know about the piano, from how to play the keys to how to deal with performance anxiety. Jatin Swaroop has made a lot of videos teaching how to play the piano, as well as videos breaking down popular and classical songs. Brandon Hawksley kept track of how long he spent learning the piano, which is great for anyone who needs a reminder of why they started.
