With an estimated value of Rs 739 billion, India's book market is worth a lot of money in 2020, India comes in second in English language publishing with more than 9000 publishers. The US is first with more than 900.
From a small beginning in the 20th century, India published 21,600 new English books in 2010.
When there are so many books out there and Indian literature is growing so quickly, it can be hard to figure out which are the best.
For this, we have made a list of the "Best Indian Books" in each category and genre.
Best Indian Classics
THE GUIDE BY R.K. NARAYAN
An Indian author called R. K. Narayan wrote the 1958 book "The Guide." The book was written in English. Like most of his books, this one is based on Malgudi, a fictional town in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
The book shows how Raju, the main character, goes from being a tour guide to becoming a spiritual guide and then one of the most important holy men in India.
An award for English writing was given to its author in 1960.
MALGUDI DAYS BY R.K. NARAYAN
Malgudi Days is a book of short stories by R.K. Narayan that was published in 1943.
The book has 32 stories that are all set in the fictional town of Malgudi, which is in South India. Life in Malgudi is shown in different ways by each of the stories that are in this book.
THE PRIVATE LIFE OF AN INDIAN PRINCE BY MULK RAJ ANAND
The Private Life of an Indian Prince is a book written by Mulk Raj Anand that was first published in 1953. People in India used to live in princely states. This book talks about how they were abolished.
UNTOUCHABLE BY MULK RAJ ANAND
Anand's aunt had a meal with a Muslim woman and was made to feel like an outsider by his family. Untouchable was based on that experience.
The argument for getting rid of the caste system is the main point of this book.
TRAIN TO PAKISTAN BY KHUSHWANT SINGH
Train to Pakistan talks about how India was split up in August 1947.
Singh doesn't just show the Partition in terms of the political events that happened at the same time. Instead, he focuses on the people who lived there, giving the event a sense of reality, horror, and believability.
GODAN BY MUNSHI PREMCHAND, TRANSLATED BY JAI RATAN
Godanis is a Hindi novel written by Munshi Premchand. It was translated into English as The Gift of a Cow.
It's about the poor people in the village who aren't getting enough money and who are being taken advantage of. In 1957, Jai Ratan made it into English.
THE ROOM ON THE ROOF BY RUSKIN BOND
As an orphaned Anglo-Indian boy, Rusty, lives with his guardian Mr. Harrison, who wants him to stay away from Indians and grow up to be a pure Englishman. The story is called The Room on the Roof.

THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES OF FELUDA BY SATYAJIT RAY
There were 35 stories about Pradosh C. Mitter, or "Feluda," written by Satyajit Ray between 1965 and 1992. Mitter is the master sleuth, and he goes by the name Feluda.
These stories are now in two volumes of The Complete Adventures of Feluda, which you can buy. It was done by Gopa Majumdar, who spoke English.

The Autobiography of an Unknown Indian is an amazing book about finding out about yourself. In this book, he talks about how India's politics, societies, and national feelings have changed over time, but he also talks about how he has changed over time. It is a serious and introspective story and historical record.

THE GOD OF SMALL THINGS BY ARUNDHATI ROY
When Esthappen and Rahel were young, they were fraternal twins who lived in the same house. Their lives were ruined by the "Love Laws" that were set up by society, which told them what they could and couldn't do.

A young man from a poor village who moves to Delhi to work as a chauffeur for the rich tells his story in this book.
THE INHERITANCE OF LOSS BY KIRAN DESAI
Inheritance of Loss by She follows the lives of Biju, an illegal immigrant in the US who is trying to start a new life, and Sai, an Indian girl who has been Anglicized and lives with her grandfather in the US.
People talk about colonialism and the effects of post-colonialism a lot in this book.
A SUITABLE BOY BY VIKRAM SETH
Vikram Seth's book A Suitable Boy is set in a country that has just become independent and hasn't been split up.
The book tells the stories of four families over the course of 18 months. It focuses on Mrs. Rupa Mehra's efforts to get her daughter, Lata, married to a "suitable boy."
It is one of the longest novels that have been published in one book in the English language so far.
SEA OF POPPIES BY AMITAV GHOSH
The Ibis is the heart of the story in Sea of Poppies. It is a huge ship with a lot of room.
Her fate is to sail across the Indian Ocean before the start of the Opium Wars in China. On board are a variety of people from all walks of life.
Another book by Amitav Ghosh is "The Hungry Tide."
NARCOPOLIS BY JEET THAYIL
There are some people who all have a love for opium in the book Narcopolis by Jeet Thayil. It tells the stories of their lives.
In this book, Bombay is stripped of its glitz, wealth, beaches, and skylines. We are taken to Shuklaji Street, Rashid's drug store, and compelled to see the other side of the city.
THE GREAT INDIAN NOVEL BY SHASHI THAROOR
It's a book by Shashi Tharoor called The Great Indian Novel. It's a satirical novel that takes the story of the Mahabharata and puts it in the context of the Indian independence movement and the first three decades after independence.
FASTING, FEASTING BY ANITA DESAI
It's the story of a family who lives in a small town in India, where local customs and attitudes rule the future of all children. Girls are to be married off and boys are to be as educated as possible, but this isn't always the case.
