I've always been a fan of reading. To be honest, I didn't read as much as I should have. Also, reading helps you learn more about the world, focus better on your business, and see things from a new angle as a business owner.
It also gives you something to talk about when you meet new people. As you can see, reading is good for both your personal and work lives.
But, that's not the main thing. Most of the time, it's hard to find time to read more books. I was able to do this with the help of the following tricks.
Don't make towering reading goals.
As a rule, don't read more books than you can handle. Do not set goals that are too high for you to reach.
Begin by setting a "easy" reading goal, like reading one book a month or 20 pages a day. A book a month isn't enough for you? Then try two a month. When you don't do too much, you'll find that reading is less stressful and more fun. I've found something very interesting. In order to read quickly and concentrate, you need to make sure that your reading doesn't make you feel stressed out.
Keep your goals to yourself
After setting a reading goal, keep it to yourself. Researchers found that writing down what it would take to become a psychologist made it less likely that they would get good grades. There was just one person in the group who knew about the activities and goals they were having. Your goals are shared with whom?
To be more precise, the people who were a control group and did not share these objectives did in fact spend more time on those things.
The reason is: When a goal is shared, there's less of a reason for you to work hard to achieve that goal. Then, if you want to read two books a month, keep your goal to yourself.
Quit early.
I'm sure you've asked yourself, "Why am I reading this?" at some point in a book. Take it easy. There are times when even the best people get hurt. It's also a good idea to stop reading a book that you don't like or find useful and start reading something else.
That's what Gretchen Rubin, a best-selling author of the book The Happiness Project, says: "Winners don't quit." When it comes to reading, that doesn't work well. Because you can quit early, Rubin says "For reading good books, there's more time. Because you feel like you have to."
Read books that you actually enjoy.
This goes along with the previous point. But when you read books that you want to read, it will be more difficult to put them down. In this case, I'm a big fan of Stephen King. Are the Dark Tower books going to help me become a better businessman or father after I read them? No. Besides, I enjoy reading so much that I have to keep going.
Wait a second. In the end, only I can tell if reading the Dark Tower series helps me or not. Maybe it makes me a better business person. Stay tuned for more information about that.
At the same time, I also mix things up. I don't just go with Stevie-boy King for me. I will read biographies or books about how to be a leader. Even though they might help me at work, I still enjoy reading them.
Always have a book on-hand.
You will always be able to read. You'll read on your way to work (well, iBook if you are driving). It takes up a lot of time when you have to wait in line at the doctor's office or waste a few minutes before a meeting or a conference call.
I like to read a book while I wait in line at the grocery store. The man at the checkout is looking for his card. Start reading now instead of letting this time go to waste.
Only if you have a book with you can you make the most of short minutes. I always have a book with me. This is even easier thanks to things like the Kindle.
Borrow reading time from something less important.
I've got it now. Reading for two or three hours a day may seem like a lot of time. if you take time from something else, you'll see that it's easy to read more.
You might not know that the average American spends five hours a day watching TV, but that's not all. If that's the case, then you should only watch TV for two hours a day and read for three hours a day. Try to read first, then watch TV. The other way around doesn't work as well.
Partake in reading challenges.
This is a great way to make you want to read more books because it's fun and interactive. For example, Goodreads has an annual challenge reading that makes your goal to read more fun to play with. Seeing what your friends read can help you find new books to read.
It has a list of reading challenges.
Create a distraction-free reading environment.
The delivery of your Amazon Prime package and your dog going crazy are two distractions you can't avoid, like when they happen. It's true, though, that there are a lot of things that you can do about.
Start by reading in a room that isn't noisy and doesn't have things like a TV. Putting your phone on silent or in airplane mode for a certain amount of time could also work for you.
Stock up.
Build up a library of books instead of buying clothes or other things that you don't really need when you have extra money.
It may sound weird at first, but it's one of the best ways to get you to read more. When you finish a book, you can look at your library and decide what to read next.
Use technology to your advantage.
Physical books are what I like best. Nothing can match the smell and feel of a real book in your hands. It's also been found that reading print leads to better understanding and memory than reading on a computer screen.
But, sometimes it's not easy or convenient to carry a book around with you all the time. Today, you can read a book on your iPad or Kindle while you're on the train or bus. Even if you're listening to an audiobook through Audible or iBooks while you work out.
In a nutshell, using technology gives you more chances to read even more books during the year.
Change your mindset.
As a media strategist and author, Ryan Holiday talks about how to read a lot of books. "In order to be good at reading, you must make it as easy for yourself to eat and breathe. When you do something, don't do it because you want to, but because it's a reflex, or a natural thing to do."
Skim.
In the case of newspapers, magazines, or online content, this is more true. But when you're reading for pleasure, don't be afraid to skim books. It helps you get through the book more quickly so that you can move on to the next one faster.
Read multiple books.
This may not work for everyone, but I have a lot of different books in different places. I have one in my bedroom, another downstairs on my iPad, and a third on my phone when I'm on the road. I always have a book nearby.
With a lot of different types of books to read at once, I don't get bored. You should also mix up the books you're reading. Somebody like Elon Musk might be the subject of a Stephen King book.
Keep your eyes open.
I always want to read new books. The best way to get ideas from the store is to look at best-seller lists on the internet. Most of the time, I find the best books when I look for recommendations on blogs or from friends.
To make sure I don't forget about a new book that looks interesting, I write it down either in my notebook or on Evernote.
Commit to reading when traveling or before bed.
The best time to read is when you're on the move. Think about how much time you have while you're waiting for your flight and while you're in the air. You might be able to read an entire book while you're on the road. Note: Make sure you download the whole book before you go. Instead of having to turn off your device or pay for WiFi, you don't have to worry about these things anymore.
As soon as you get home from a trip, read a book. If you don't want to watch TV or check your social media, choose this instead. If you read more, you'll also sleep better.
Eliminate decision fatigue.
Yes. Decision fatigue is real, and it can stop you from being productive and starting new habits, like reading, that you want to do.
Instead of looking through a million and a million new book releases, look for lists that have been carefully chosen. People like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg make good reading lists. Any list helps you avoid getting tired of making decisions and gives you more time to read.
Settle down.
It's hard to enjoy a book when your mind is occupied and going at a high rate of speed. Then there are deadlines you must reach or customers you must invoice. Also, you have to clean your dishes or wash your clothes. I try to do these tasks before I start reading so that they don't bother me. I've also found that exercising and meditating help me put my mind at ease, as well.
