What Are the Best Books on Warren Buffett?
If you think about it, Warren Buffett is 90 years old. He still goes out.
1 At least, that's how it looks at first. You're likely to see his face at least once and his name a few more times if you look in the financial section of any book.
It's hard to think that all of these people have the same opinion about Buffett as an investor or as a person. In fact, it's hard to believe some of them even spoke to him. Most of the time, they are getting their information from the Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A, BRK.B) shareholder letters that Warren Buffett writes, or from other common sources of information, like the news. But there is a lot to learn from those letters, and some of the books on those shelves are truly unique.
Choose which book to read based on whether you want to learn how to invest from the man or learn more about the man and the person. You might not find these books as satisfying as owning Berkshire shares for the last 45 years. But they still have a lot of knowledge and fun in them.
The Best Books on Warren Buffett
The Warren Buffett Way, by Robert G. Hagstrom
If you want to learn about investing from Buffett's impressive record, Hagstrom's book might be just what you need to do it right. A book called The Warren Buffett Way, which is now in its third edition, lays out all the rules of thumb that Buffett uses when he invests and walks the reader through them with examples from Buffett's own investments.
Rules like buying businesses you know and not paying attention to Mr. Market (an imaginary, emotional investor made up by Buffett's mentor, Benjamin Graham), as well as deeper lessons from the real-life investments Buffett has made, are among them. Investing is a great book for people who are just starting out. Even if you think you know what you're doing, this book is still a good one to read.
The Essays of Warren Buffett: Lessons for Corporate America, by Warren Buffett & Lawrence Cunningham
Buffett has never written a book on his own. Taken as a whole, his shareholder letters are like several books. But if you read them back-to-back, they don't sound very good because there is no editor to help them. Lawrence Cunningham was able to solve that problem by going through the letters and grouping Buffett's thoughts about different things. 3
He's added some editorial voice, which may have been necessary to make everything work together. But the content and Buffett's philosophy are still his. The Essays of Warren Buffett: Lessons for Corporate America is now in its fifth edition. It has a bigger scope than The Warren Buffett Way and isn't just for individual investors, but you will still learn a lot about investing.
The Warren Buffett CEO: Secrets from the Berkshire Hathaway Managers, by Robert P. Miles
More than anything else, the CEO of Warren Buffett is not about Buffett as an investor. It is more about him as a manager. Buffett chooses the CEOs for Berkshire's many businesses and how he runs them. This book shows how he does that. It tells that story through the people who work for Berkshire. 5
If you read the Warren Buffett CEO, you won't learn how to make money. But you will learn a lot about great companies and great management, two things every investor needs to keep in mind, as well as future managers and business professionals. More importantly, the book shows a side of Warren Buffett that isn't always seen because of how well his investments have done. Buffett is a great manager and a great investor, so he is a great person.
Dear Mr. Buffett: What an Investor Learns 1,269 Miles from Wall Street, by Janet Tavakoli
This is a book about Warren Buffett, but it isn't really about him. He is one of the main characters, but it isn't really about him. Janet Tavakoli is a structured finance expert who has written about collateralized debt obligations in the past. The financial mess of 2009 made her see more value in Buffett's philosophy and value investing methods after she met him. 6
This book can help you see Buffett in a new way, through the eyes of someone else. If you're an investor, some of the information in this book will make you uncomfortable. For example, the systematic abuses that led to the subprime mortgage meltdown, which in turn led to the Great Recession, will be hard to read about.
The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life, by Alice Schroeder and Buffett, Making of an American Capitalist, by Roger Lowenstein
There are two Buffett biographies out there if you've read all of the other books and still think you haven't learned enough. Buffett, Making of an American Capitalist was written by Lowenstein, a veteran Wall Street Journal reporter. The audiobook version of the book has some changes and updates from Lowenstein. 7 Schroeder wrote a book that was over 900 pages long when it was first published in 2008. It was written with the help of Warren Buffett. 8
Both will not change your knowledge of the man's investment strategies, but they will give you a long look at Buffett's life and achievements.
The Intelligent Investor
Only Buffett's words will be able to do The Intelligent Investor right. It's Buffett's preface to the book's fourth edition that says, "It's been a long time since I read this book." "Before 1950, I read this book when I was 19. I thought then that it was the best book about investing that had ever been written, by far. Still, I think it is." It doesn't take a lot to be a good investor, he says. You just need the right mindset for making decisions. He says that The Intelligent Investor "exactly and clearly" gives the right framework for investing.
