A book is the best friend you can have, because it is always there for you, is easy to get in touch with, is wise, and is patient with you.
- Charles William Eliot was a man.
True, that's true.
Reading not only helps language learners learn new words, but it also helps them improve their grammar, mechanics, and adapt to their conversational partners better, so they don't make conversational mistakes.
If you ask me, reading is the one language skill that is linked to writing, speaking, and listening.
There's something about reading a great book and letting it take you on its own journey that can't be replaced by any number of lessons, tests, or conversations with even the best English speakers.
In the past few years, online methods of learning languages have become more popular with young people. Literary classics will always be popular, no matter how far technology goes.
The following books are must-reads for anyone who wants to improve their English, no matter what their level is.
The Old Man and the Sea
by Ernest Hemingway
When an experienced fisherman named Santiago doesn't catch anything for 84 days, people call him "salao," the worst kind of bad luck. Soon, his fate changes when he fights a huge marlin for his life.
What did you learn from reading? In writing this article, this literary classic was the first thing that came to my mind when I thought about it. I'm sure you'll come across Ernest Hemingway's work at some point in your life, no matter where you come from (most probably at school). It's a difficult piece for young people, because it uses words that are both old and hard to understand at times.
However, compared to some of the other books on this list, this one is very short and makes for a great read that will help you improve your English in more ways than one. Hemingway's writing style is pretty simple, with simple words and short sentences. Thus, it isn't one of the books I'd put at the top of my list of the most difficult to read.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
by J.K. Rowling
Harry Potter is a sad young boy who gets an invitation to Hogwarts, a school of magic and witchcraft. There, he meets dangerous creatures and his long-time enemy, Lord Voldemort.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is just one part of this well-known story. All other parts and spin-offs are just as important and can help you learn English. Fantasy stories can be very good for people of all ages, because they can help them have a more colorful imagination, which can help them in school and in life.
Rowling's language is mostly British English, so there are a lot of unique words, sentences, and expressions in the book. When I read a book, I think the writing is easy to read. It's also very descriptive, which makes the reader feel like he or she is right there with everything going on.
While I can't say that Harry Potter books are easy for all English learners to read, they aren't that hard either. To be honest, they are a huge help for people who are just learning to read. They also help people who want to improve their reading habits.
The Giver
by Lois Lowry
There are no cold weather, colors, love, wars, or pain in Jonas' world. Everyone has a job in the community and everyone is important. Afterward, Jonas spends time with the Giver, who teaches him everything about the world. This causes Jonas to question the "perfections" of his community and rediscover life from a new angle.
The Giver is one of the easiest and most interesting books I've ever read. It's not because of its fantasy content, but because it's one of the easiest and most interesting books I've read. The reason for this is that Lowry presents a complicated, new world in a simple way through vivid, attention-grabbing descriptions and simple grammar.
Most of the story takes place in the past simple or the past perfect, but not both. Short sentences and a simple story line make this book a great and quick read, even though it's long. Plus, the movie version is great!
Animal Farm
by George Orwell
Animals on the Manor Farm are abused by their owner, farmer Mr. Jones, who doesn't give them enough food and water to live a good life. This makes the animals angry at their human masters, which makes them want to leave. The whole story is a spoof of the Stalin era in the Soviet Union.
As with the book itself, I'll keep this part of the analysis short and to the point. There will be language that we don't use every day in this story because it is an allegory. They speak in very short, clear sentences as the book's main characters. It's also very easy to read, so the whole book is a good choice for anyone who wants to improve their English.
Thirteen Reasons Why
by Jay Asher
During this story, Clay Jensen gets a strange box on his doorstep. Inside are thirteen cassette tapes with his name on them. These were recorded by his former classmate and crush, Hannah Baker, who took her own life two weeks before these events took place. He was one of the people who led her there, and she tells her story.
An in-depth look at the book Thirteen Reasons Why: The Netflix show that aired in 2016 made it a best-seller. It hits all the right notes for a good book. Set in the present and told by the show's protagonist, there aren't many complicated grammar rules used. Most of the action is in the present tense, and there aren't many words that are hard to say. Furthermore, the vocabulary is easy to understand, and the sentences and paragraphs are short to go with it.
However, because this book talks about some very serious and painful social issues, it isn't always a book that makes you feel motivated, happy, and accomplished. By any means, this isn't a light read. As a bonus, I have a must-read book that I think you should read. People say you should not miss this one.
Bonus: Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English
How can this be a piece of literature and why is it on this list? Is it true and should it be?
However, learning new English words in unique ways is important to becoming a better English speaker. One of the weirdest and most effective ways I've found to improve my vocabulary is to flip through the dictionary and read it, if you will.
In the end... "Reading a dictionary" sounds like a crazy idea, but it does work.
People who read e-books are more relaxed because they can choose where to start and finish. This allows them to understand and absorb more content than they would with a normal book.
You move your index finger over the page until your mind picks up on something that looks interesting, and then you read more about it and try to remember it.
In the past, my favorite dictionaries have always been made by Longman because they have a very detailed structure, a lot of examples, and a huge vocabulary database. It's just a great tool that helps you with your English reading and helps you learn vocabulary and languages at the same time.
