It's a new kind of poetry that's coming out now. Sometimes, when we think of this word, we immediately think of literary giants such as Emily Bront and Walt Whitman. But there's a stumbling block: Their work can be difficult to follow at times due to the complexity and nuance of their ideas. Accessibility is critical. Shorter, sassier, and more memorable. Something that might include a few small illustrations. As a result, more works like Rupi Kaur's Milk and Honey have been published.
Even if Rupi Kaur didn't invent it, it certainly feels like she did. There's a chance she's just the first one to take off and sell millions of copies. I'm fine with it either way. It's a combination of her labor and the labor she (probably) inspired.
As I was compiling this, I kept finding more and more books I wanted to read, so take this list with a grain of salt. Many books, like milk and honey, are attractive because of their small size. Of course, it's also stunning.
Bone by Yrsa Daley-Ward
This one could be a bit of a pain. When it comes to religion, desire, and being a woman in the modern world, Yrsa Daley-Ward doesn't hold back. She writes about the vulnerability that comes with love. She focuses on the human condition in her writing. The poems in this collection are lovely.
The Chaos of Longing by K.Y. Robinson
The Chaos of Longing is divided into four parts: Inception, Longing, Chaos, and Epiphany. With raw honesty, K.Y. Robinson explores life, love, and trauma. Moreover, take a look at the cover art.
Depression & Other Magic Tricks by Sabrina Benaim
Depression & Other Magic Tricks is a good choice if you're feeling lonely. Sabrina Benaim has done an excellent job of capturing the different levels of depression.
Dispatch from the Future by Leigh Stein
Life, love, and the internet are all featured in this beautiful collection. In addition, there's Greek mythology. She does it all—poetry, fiction and memoir—with such aplomb.
Even this Page is White by Vivek Shraya
Is it possible to publish a book of poems that explores the contemporary issues of skin color and race? Please, yes.
The Feeling May Remain by Akif Kichloo
There are many layers of meaning in Akif Kichloo's work here, which touches on the beauty and ugliness of life.
I Hope This Reaches Her in Time by R.H. Sin
This is a powerful collection of poems about overcoming the trauma of love after being in an abusive relationship. Sin is currently releasing a number of collections and doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon.
IRL by Tommy Pico
Poetry, but also one long text message about love and life and history - and how the Internet has messed with it all — are all present in "IRL." For as long as I can remember, I'll be reading everything Tommy Pico has to say.
Newspaper Blackout by Austin Kleon
These poems were not written by Austin Kleon. He used a black marker and a piece of newspaper to create them. This is such a brilliant concept. I'm in love. Milk and honey may not fit in with other books, but this one is a lot of fun.
No Matter the Wreckage by Sarah Kay, Sophia Janowitz (Illustrator)
A stunning debut poetry collection from Sarah Kay. Aside from Ted Hughes' ex-girlfriend, she also writes to her brother, as well as to the rest of us. I think this is my favorite one so far.
Odes to Common Things by Pablo Neruda, Ken Krabbenhoft (translator), Ferris Cook (Illustrator)
You may need a break from reading books like milk and honey that are overly personal and autobiographical. Here is a delightful collection of poems about everyday items like tables, oranges, and soap calledOdes to Common Things.
The Princess Saves Herself in this One by Amanda Lovelace
Saved by Her Own Power, the Princess Most evocative of milk and honey is this one. The shortest and most potent of the bunch. Amanda Lovelace is a poet to keep an eye on.
Rapture by Sjohnna McCray
Because the poems in Rapture are so moving, I had to put the book down after a few poems. Sjohnna McCray's collection of essays on fatherhood and family life left me speechless.
Salt. by Nayyirah Waheed
Whew.
salt. is short but powerful in its discussion of race, culture, and beauty.
Stuff I’ve Been Feeling Lately by Alicia Cook
Poetry about the human condition, life, love, and loss was collected by Alicia Cook and released as a mixtape on her Soundcloud page. The poems are on Side A, while the blacked-out versions of those poems are on Side B. Fun!
Cook is also a well-known advocate for families affected by substance abuse. The Willow Tree Center in New Jersey will receive all of her royalties from this collection as a gift from her.
The Sun and Her Flowers by Rupi Kaur
Rupi Kaur's second collection, the sun and her flowers, is like milk and honey. If you missed it when it came out in late 2017, here's your chance.
I think this one is better than Milk and Honey, but I adore everything Rupi Kaur writes, so that shouldn't come as a surprise.
Teaching My Mother How to Give Birth by Warsan Shire
What a force to be reckoned with. This collection is beyond words. Take a look at it on your own.
Whereas by Layli Long Soldier
Lady Long Soldier writes about being a woman and mother while also being from the Sioux tribe of the Northern Plains Indians. She has fun with her appearance and makes the most of it. In contrast, the United States government's language toward Native Americans and their tribes is called into question. This is a must-read.
Sunflower Soul by Distinee Gayle
Distinee Gayle's Sunflower Soul explores themes of heartbreak, love, and identity in a poetic style. Gayle's poems are full of vivid imagery that captures the contrasts between the hardships and joys of life. By illustrating the struggle and growth that comes from shattering the lie that we are unworthy of love in this book, the poet hopes to create a garden of love for our souls.
